Για ακομα μια χρονια η AUDI τους πηρε τα σωβρακα ολων!

The #2 Audi R10 TDI crew composed of Kristensen-McNish-Capello came out on top of the 76th edition of the world-renowned Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, beating out a strong and consistent effort from the Peugeot team.

Despite rain returning to the Sarthe circuit during the final hour of racing, nothing would come to prevent Audi from signing a fifth consecutive win at the French venue, the German team's eighth victory overall following those obtained in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

For his 12th participation at Le Mans, 40-year-old Dane driver Tom Kristensen also accomplished an eighth win, his previous success being in 2005. Scotsman Allan McNish, 38, tastes victory again at Le Mans, ten years after doing so with Jaguar. As a gift to himself for his 44th birthday this coming Tuesday, Dindo Capello signed his third win: 2003 with Bentley, 2004 with the Audi R8 and this year with the Audi R10.

The first Peugeot 908 was the second-placed #7 car manned by Marc Genι, Nicolas Minassian and Jacques Villeneuve; the only other car in the same lap as the winning Audi crew. Gambles were made through risky and ambitious tyre choices while the track was partly wet, switching from wets to slicks to wets again, but it was not enough to clinch victory.

A second Peugeot took third place at the chequered flag, the #9 908 HDi FAP driven by Franck Montagny, Ricardo Zonta and Christian Klien.

The victim of many technical worries during the course of the event, the pole-sitting #8 Peugeot of Lamy-Sarrazin-Wurz came in fifth, between the fourth and sixth-placed Audis of Luhr-Premat-Rockenfeller aboard car #3 and Biela-Pirro-Werner at the controls of car #1 respectively.

In seventh position overall, and first of the petrol-powered contenders, the #17 Pescarolo Judd of Primat-Tinseau-Treluyer was easily ahead of the #5 Courage-Oreca driven by Groppi-Ayari-Duval. 


It was an almost uncontested LMP2 win for the #34 Van Merksteijn Porsche RS Spyder of the all-Dutch Verstappen-Bleekemolen-Van Merksteijn trio. The same-model #31 Team Essex entry and Saulnier Racing's #35 Pescarolo-Judd completed the podium for this class. The Van Merksteijn racer was also tenth overall.

Beaten in qualifying, Aston Martin had the last word during the race. The #009 DBR9 of Brabham-Garcia-Turner emerged fastest of the LMGT1 division and 13th overall, ahead of the challenge represented by the works #63 and #64 Corvette Racing C6.Rs which had arrived at Le Mans well-prepared. They were followed by the #007 sister factory Aston Martin and the #72 Corvette of the Luc Alphand Aventures team in fifth LMGT1 position.

Success was complete for Ferrari entries in the LMGT2 category, with the #82 Risi Competizione of Salo-Melo-Bruni taking the class win and standing 19th overall. The #97 BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari F430 came in second while the #90 Farnbacher Racing completed the category's podium, ahead of more Ferraris.

Of the 55 entries, 20 cars did not reach the finish line, including representatives of Team Oreca, Charouz Racing System, Pescarolo Sport, Epsilon Euskadi, Embassy Racing, Speedy Racing Team Sebah, and the unique LMP1 Tokai University student project, which nonetheless lasted longer than most pundits expected.

The 2008 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours race was quite an event, with Audi holding on to its string of victories and Peugeot showing it was up to the challenge indeed.
